Most of LA's housing stock consists of small, single-family houses distributed in sparse suburban neighborhoods. Although more dense typologies have been introduced in the past few decades, this single-house type persists.
As a housing model, it embodies the individual ownership of dwelling and outdoor space. The result is a static model that endlessly repeats, devoid of interdependence. Unable to adapt to change over time, the house either holds out or is replaced with an updated version of the same.
Exploring the architecture of a new typology of housing capable of incremental change over time, structured by a loose interdependence between its parts, whether responding to changes in family structure, economic pressures, or lifestyle, embodying “FREE PLAY WITHIN LIMITS.”
