On The Hill
Advisor: Maxi Spina

This thesis focuses on Los Angeles' housing crisis, by rethinking hillside development through the idea of challenging the traditional idea of hillside mountains. The idea of the building is inhabitation on the steep mountain instead of something to be conquered. The steep typology focuses on minimal grading leading to terrain-focused architecture, in alignment with the Baseline Hillside Ordinance (BHO).

The BHO aims to limit excessive grading and alteration of the landscaped hillside to mitigate environmental risks like erosion and wildfires while preserving the hillside’s character. The mixed-use of architectural techniques and landscape tools coordinate together making the architecture fit on the hillside perfectly.
